Dos Alas - Two Wings, One Heart Album

Fantuzzi's Album Dos Alas - Two Wings, One Heart is an outpouring of passion; vibrant, lively, soulfully rich, achingly sweet – a homage to Fantuzzi's Puerto-Rican roots and an astounding collaboration with some of Cuba's best and brightest young Latin-Jazz and Rock musicians.

The velvet lover's caress of Fantuzzi's unique voice is beautifully complemented by heart-rendingly gorgeous vocals from sister Puerto-Rican Nerissa Onelove and the delicate naïvety of Cuban Nurimar Garcia Navarro. Aldo López-Gavilán, hailed as “simply a genius, a star” by the legendary Chucho Valdés, and labelled “a formidable virtuoso” by The London Times, collaborated on several tracks to create a deliciously complex tapestry through his brilliant arrangements and the work of his musician colleagues (many of whom also play with Chucho Valdés, Winton Marsalis and other greats) .

This album not only showcases the talents of the islands, but this music will stir your blood and light your soul.

Where did the title of the album come from?
Puerto Rican poet and journalist Lola Rodríguez de Tió was one of the most prominent early advocates for Puerto Rican independence. Among her most popular works was "A Cuba," from which the excerpt below is taken. Rodríguez lived her final years in Cuba.

Cuba y Puerto Rico son
de un pájaro las dos alas,
reciben flores o balas
sobre el mismo corazón
...

Cuba and Puerto Rico are
As two wings of the same bird,
They receive flowers and bullets
Into the same heart ...

Revered in both Cuba and Puerto Rico, Lola Rodríguez de Tió used her talents as a writer and poet to promote Puerto Rican liberty and democracy at a time of Spanish dominance.

It was rare for women to be educated in Puerto Rico; most women, especially poor women, were illiterate. It was rarer still for a woman to be an intellectual, but Rodríguez de Tió, who had shown early promise as a poet, was supported and encouraged by poet Ursula Cardona de Quinones . Her understanding of the disparity of opportunity for women made Rodríguez de Tió one of Latin America's most influential early feminists.

The work for which Rodríguez de Tió is best known, and which caused her to be deported, was "La Borinqueña." In 1868, she composed a fiery lyric for a traditional melody, then read it aloud at a literary gathering at her home to immediate acclaim. "Awake, Borinqueños, for they've given the signal!," it begins. "Awake from your sleep, for it's time to fight!" "La Borinqueña" became Puerto Rico's national anthem...”
